Majorda: A village of pride

My village is one of the most beautiful village located in South Goa. It is a place where Jesuits discovered the best toddy (sap from the coconut palm) of Goa who used to leaven the bread. Even today the people of Majorda are known to be the best bakers of Goa. They were the first ones to know the art of baking bread.

My village is famous for its beach. There are many beach resorts in Majorda. Few of them are Majorda beach resort, Shangrila beach resort, Treehouse blue, The diwali club.

There is also a church in Majorda known as Mother of God and opposite the church there is a railway track. There is a railway station in Majorda.

Majorda Church:

The Mother of God Church is also known as the ' Mae de Deus Church'. The church was built in 1588. My granny told me that on 5th of May, 1588 the foundation stone of the church was laid wherein an image of Our Lady was placed in a wooden box in an opening.

She also told me that the church was set on fire by the Marathas during an invasion in April 1738. During this time the chapel of Our Lady of Piety was built in 1691 which served as the parish church. The church was reconstructed in 1739.

It is known that earlier a famous Hindu temple existed in Majorda which was dedicated to Mamay i.e Great Mother. When the Majorda church was built it was therefore a happy coincidence that both the church and the village were dedicated to Mother of God. Later devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Boa Morte (Happy Death) became very popular.

There are two feasts of Blessed Virgin Mary celebrated. First one is the Mother of God celebrated on 1st Sunday of May and the other one Our Lady of Boa Morte( Happy Death) on the 1st Sunday of October.

Majorda Beach:

Majorda is also famous for the beautiful beach. It is one of the prettiest beach that has a lot of palm groves. Some of the most famous hotels and resorts of Goa are found here and thus it is quite a popular place for a holiday. This beach also has a number of restaurants and beach shacks that serve up tasty dishes from the cuisine of Goa, Russia, Europe and India.

This is a great beach for nature lovers and adventure seekers. There is water sports here which you can enjoy. There are a few clubs, restaurants, and pubs too. You can go on long walks. Or you can just sit back and relax, enjoying the beauty of nature.

Majorda is never as crowded as the north Goa beaches. It is a clean and wide beach with golden white sand, which gets wider at the center because a small stream meets the Arabian Sea here. You will see a few small bamboo bridges over the stream as you approach the beach from the Majorda Beach Road.

Majorda Beach, is believed to be the same place where the highly revered Hindu God, Lord Rama was bought after he had been kidnapped as a child. Much later, when his wife Sita was kidnapped by Ravana, Lord Rama had camped at the Cabo de Rama – close to where the beach ends.
